Gustav Courbet, I feel, openly expresses what we are doing right now in class with self-portraits, of course. He uses a lot of shadow and dark lines and colors to, perhaps unintentionally, channel this sense and feeling of worry. Maybe he's worried person? We don't know, but that's the feeling given off by his self-portrait. I think a lot of us need to focused on evoking feelings in our own projects.
